Introducing San Luis Obispo Chiropractor Dr. Leslie Kasanoff

Seeing the miracles that happen through the healing powers of Nature and God is an almost a daily occurrence in my practice. But the route there was a long and serendipitous adventure . . .
. . .It was the moment I knew I had made a HUGE mistake.
There I stood at the bedside of a little elderly lady, who to my 22 year-old eyes looked like she was 110. She was screaming; a horrendous scream that I’ll never forget and I was helpless to do anything to help her. . .
I was there only to receive the bone marrow sample the pathologist was trying to obtain. Receive it and make microscope slides so my colleagues in the lab and myself could view the slides later that day.
As I stood there that day, I was at a crossroad: just 2 months before graduation, after 4 years of school and a 1 year internship in the hospital, ready to get my degree as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.
I was appalled that this procedure was being done though it would make NO difference in her care plan.
That's when I realized I didn't belong there. Not just in that room at that time; but in the hospital, in the laboratory, in medicine as a whole. I realized that despite the fact that medicine TRIED to be about relieving suffering and prolonging life, sometime it failed miserably at both and even when it didn't, I realized that was not my calling. I knew, almost instinctively, that the human body was self-healing and that my calling was to help people re-kindle that aspect of their being; the part of them was about well-being and growth; not just about moving away from suffering.
Fast forward 2 months:
I graduated and accepted a position in Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, Burns Unit in Boston. I spent what would be my last New England winter in the Microbiology Lab there. Even the satisfaction of helping to saves lives in such a place couldn’t deter me from the new path that I knew I needed to seek.
The following June, I took off on my bicycle with 4 comrades to explore the Western U.S. I realize now, that exploration was also a metaphor for exploring myself, my career, my calling and life in general. That trip brought me to the Central Coast.
Chiropractic chose me more than I chose it. I say that because I knew relatively little about it. I had accompanied a friend to her appointment with her chiropractor and it was in the moments in his office and in his presence, that I realized this was the path. It wasn’t anything he said or did. More than anything, it was just the presence and healing energy that I felt that day that instinctively propelled me. I applied to school and was accepted almost immediately.
That was about 20 years ago. After receiving my license at Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon, we relocated back to the central coast and settled in Los Osos. I followed the advice of others, practicing initially in San Luis Obispo. In 2001 when I was unable to secure a larger facility in San Luis I moved my practice to Arroyo Grande. Then, listening to my heart, I realized the time was right for a second practice in Los Osos. That facility, which also has a retail Wellness Center opened October 1, 2007.

Dr. Kasanoff is married to Paul Haueter and they have 2 children; Gregg, a music student current attending Cuesta College and Nalani, enrolled at Baywood Elementary.
Paul works for Golden State Water Company running the drinking water facilities they operate in Los Osos and San Luis Obispo.
Dr. Kasanoff is a volunteer with Los Osos 4H as a project leader and assistant. She also volunteers her time with the Los Osos Rotary Club, Temple Ner Shalom and the Five Cities Women’s Network.
Her outdoor hobbies include bicycling, hiking, beachcombing. During foul weather she enjoys needlework and reading.
